Electric light came early to this corner, and the café kept writers.
Lajos Pákey drew the block in 1894 and gave it a corner tower and a café at street level. It was the first house in Cluj wired for electric light, and the tower carried the name in letters over the corner.
The café below became the table of the Gândirea circle: the review was written across the street from it, and the writers drank under the ceiling they were printing about.
In 1938 Octavian Goga was taken ill at that table and died days later; the café keeps the corner where he sat. The house itself kept the tower, the bays and the long balcony line over Piața Avram Iancu. Back to the whole registry.
I crossed the square at dusk to look up at the corner. The tower was still lit from below by the shop signs, and its letters threw a shadow up the plaster instead of down.
Notes from the stay
- 2 minutes on foot to the Piața Avram Iancu stops
- 6 minutes on foot to the central park gate
- 11 minutes on foot to the Matthias statue
in short The tower corner is the room to ask for. The café at street level opens before the shops. The park gate is 6 minutes up the avenue. Nothing is booked here — the sheet only keeps where the house stands and how the doors are reached.
