Art Nouveau arches over the lane and the café tables below.

The Coroana was built in 1910 by Schuller and Goldsmidt, and its ground floor was cut into one long Art Nouveau arcade over the lane of the old town. The town took to the café under it at once and called it the Capșa of Brașov.

Blaga drank here, and so did Cioran; the tables under the arches were the counter of every argument in the city. The building kept the arches after 1948, when it passed into state hands.

The upper floors carry the curve of the style in plaster, and the corner turns with a bay above the lane. Republicii is closed to cars, so the arcade is walked, not driven past. Back to the whole registry.

I sat under the third arch in the morning, with the shutters still down around me. The plaster wreath above was one shade lighter than the coffee in front of me, and the lane smelled of rain.

Notes from the stay

in short Take a room above the arcade, the lane is quiet at night. The café under the arches opens first thing. Republicii runs straight to the square, 2 minutes. Nothing is booked here — the sheet only keeps where the house stands and how the doors are reached.
