A fencing master's hall, now rooms above the old square.
Gaetano Biasini, a fencing master from Italy, put the house up in 1837 and kept his fencing hall on the floor above. The square outside was the market of the town, and the hall became the room where the town met.
Liszt played in it in 1846. Two years later Bălcescu and Petőfi talked through the terms of the revolution in the same rooms, and a plaque on the wall now holds both occasions in bronze.
The floor above the entrance still reads as a hall: tall windows, a long landing, the square low and wide in front. The house sits in the frame of Piața Unirii, one door from the corner of the old town. Back to the whole registry.
I read the plaque from the pavement with a market crate against my shin. Above it the window where the fencing hall was is open, and the sound coming out of it is a chair being dragged.
Notes from the stay
- 1 minute on foot to the Piața Unirii fountain
- 7 minutes on foot to the Matthias statue and the church
- 3 minutes on foot to the Piața Unirii bus stops
in short Ask for the landing side, the square side carries the market. The plaque is at eye height by the door, easy to miss. The old town lanes start at the corner, 1 minute. Nothing is booked here — the sheet only keeps where the house stands and how the doors are reached.
