Secession gold on the corner, with Ady's café chairs still inside.
The Grand Hotel Astoria went up between 1902 and 1906 to the drawings of Sztarill, the architect who gave Oradea most of its Secession. The corner is cut into a turret under a lantern, and the windows carry gold on green.
Ady Endre drank in the café at street level, and the town still points at the table. The arches of the ground floor are painted inside, and the chairs under them are the same bentwood type the house has always used.
The floors above hold the turret rooms, small and high, with the corner glass running down to the sill. Republicii is a walking street, so the windows take no traffic, only the light and the pavement below. Back to the whole registry.
I came back after dark to look at the turret. It was lit from below with a warm wash, and the gold on the arches sat above the pavement like a second, higher street.
Notes from the stay
- 3 minutes on foot to the Black Eagle palace passage
- 6 minutes on foot to the Union Square and the moon church
- 4 minutes on foot to the Republicii stops
in short Ask for a turret room, the corner glass is the point. The passage of the Black Eagle is 3 minutes down. Republicii is car-free after the morning deliveries. Nothing is booked here — the sheet only keeps where the house stands and how the doors are reached.
