A brick tower above the roofs, raised by an insurance society.
The Aro Palace was raised in 1939 for the ARO insurance society, to the design of Horia Creangă, and it came out as the tallest thing on the north side of the old town. Nine floors of yellow brick stand against the wooded flank of Tâmpa.
In 1948 the house was taken over and renamed Carpați, and the tower carried that name for four decades. The Aro name returned after 1990, with the sign along the parapet and the terracotta panels of the lobby.
The dining rooms face the mountain and the roofs of the Schei, and the terrace under the parapet catches the light until the ridge goes dark. Rooms on the upper floors look straight into the trees. Back to the whole registry.
I took the stairs to the top landing and came out on the terrace strip. The whole black hillside was in front of me, and below it the red roof tiles of the old town were being swept.
Notes from the stay
- 3 minutes on foot to the foot of the Tâmpa path
- 8 minutes on foot to the Black Church and the Council Square
- 5 minutes on foot to the Bulevardul Eroilor stops
in short Upper floors and the terrace carry the view, the lower the noise. The Tâmpa path starts three minutes above the hotel. The Black Church is 8 minutes down the boulevard. Nothing is booked here — the sheet only keeps where the house stands and how the doors are reached.
